TED Talk Screening & Discussion Series Part 1: An Interview with the Founders of Black Lives Matter

The Cal Maritime Library & Housing Department are proud to announce a semester-long series of TED Talk screenings followed by group discussion. Each of these events will be held on the first Tuesday of the month in February, March and April from 1100-1145 in the Library Green Room.

The first screening & discussion will be “An Interview with the Founders of Black Lives Matter,” which is a TED video recorded at the TEDWomen 2016 conference. Mia Birdsong interviewed Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi about their experiences with leadership in social justice action, and what gives them hope and inspiration to continue working through challenging circumstances. Faculty, staff and students are all welcome. Join us to listen, watch and discuss!

The TED website describes the video like this: “Born out of a social media post, the Black Lives Matter movement has sparked discussion about race and inequality across the world. In this spirited conversation with Mia Birdsong, the movement’s three founders share what they’ve learned about leadership and what provides them with hope and inspiration in the face of painful realities. Their advice on how to participate in ensuring freedom for everybody: join something, start something and ‘sharpen each other, so that we all can rise.'”
